in which many peacocks are to be seen

The day before I turned 20, See-Ann, Rachel and I (whom I will now dub as the Three Market-eers because our names are too long to type in one sentence without getting distracted) went for a lovely brunch session near Templestowe. I can't for the life of me remember the cafe name (it might have had been something to do with poets), but the food was so drool-worthy and worth the driving effort. It was a charming, sleepy little cafe hidden in a tiny alley. It was so small that the sunlight couldn't really hit the window panes well enough to light up the cafe in daytime, but it was so quaint that I'm ready to forgive all the badly lit photos we took inside it.

From top left, clockwise: See-Ann had the scrambled eggs on toast with spinach, Rachel had organic muesli with yoghurt and poached apples (which we kept referring to as peaches...in our pre-adventure intoxicated state), and I had the tomato, mozzarella and spinach toast. I also had the tastiest latte in a mug. Not many places in Melbourne serve their coffees in mugs anymore... something I wish they would bring back because coffees are unequivocally better-tasting in mugs, not espresso cups. Or glassware (!!!).

See-Ann and Rachel still posing. I was eating and taking photos of them arranging their plates. By the time they were done, I was done!

So after eating our way through 2 hours, we drove up to Montsalvat, a beautiful 200-acres worth of lush grass, galleries and peacocks. Montsalvat is still running as an artists' commune, and in it currently resides about 10 local artists, who contribute to the many small galleries dotted around the commune. The wonderful thing about Montsalvat is that it's only $10 for student entry, and you're pretty much free to roam around the place as long as you like. There are only a handful of spots that are strictly residential, but they're cottages that the artists and landowners reside in, so that was completely understandable. Would've been a tad awkward if we'd used their bathrooms by mistake.

See-Ann being a gentle(wo)man. It was nice of her to remember I was running after the two of them most of the time.

The prettiest daisies that we subsequently murdered.

Pensive portraits next to a Monet-esque lily pond. We heard toads in the distance... scary.

One thing about Montsalvat (and we've unanimously agreed that it's a rather successful ploy on the landowners' part in roping in more tourists) that really amazes me are the free-range peacocks. I know it makes me sound like a country bumpkin but free-range peacocks! Not one, or two, but imagine a family of peacocks strolling acres of land, surprising you at random turns. Which was what happened to us when we got there - we'd be busy snapping shots and all of a sudden this comes into the viewfinder.

They also have a penchant for perching on ridiculously high rooftops. How did they get up there??

We also found a peahen, much to See-Ann's surprise.

If you have a day to spend with a group of close friends and good company, we highly suggest Montsalvat. The Meeting Place is the name of the restaurant that has made it semi-famous within culinary circles, which is always a plus.

cambylicious

The first place locals in Melbourne suggest to visiting friends or relatives would be Camberwell Market, a flea market of sorts that fills out all 70-odd open carpark lots at Camberwell, from 7am to12pm every Sunday. It's a hustling, bustling, grab-before-you-think, buy-before-you-try kind of market and we LIKE IT IMMENSELY. It is a truth universally known that shopping is therapeutic, but cheap shopping? On a weekly basis? Yeah, we're in love too.

So after 2 years of shopping at Camby, the ultra-hip blogger-sisters Rachel and Rebekah asked us to join them as sellers at Camberwell! For the first time, See-Ann and I (well, possibly just me, because I think See-Ann has done this before haha) decided to overhaul our wardrobes and get some extra moolah out of it. It took us a whole weekend and a bit to finally get down to dissecting our wardrobes, and by the end of it... we had enough to clothe a small village.

But enough of the idle chatter!

We arrived at Camby at 7: 10am (lugging about 5 kilos of clothes, and portable tables and a clothes rack... not a pretty sight), and got busy setting up store. Then we got cracking!

As mentioned, the lovely sisters from The Iron, The Stitch and the Wardrobe. Why are they so hip? Sometimes it hurts to be their friends.

See-Ann working hard.

 Writing up tags for promotion.

People were already beginning to browse at 7: 30!

The sisters' dresses, which they sold at ridiculously affordable prices. Now if only they weren't so petite!

They also hand-made EVERY ONE of these beautiful little gems! Peg-earrings, toy car necklaces, hand-made tea-stained notebooks and more... so talented (:

Eating the famous jam donuts...om nom nom
Keeping guard (:

Camby was fantastic (: And the weather really held up, which was surprising, given this time of the year. It didn't rain, which was great, and the sun came out halfway so it was truly a promising start to future sales here at Camberwell. If you're in Melbourne, and you haven't yet been - this is the site for bookings, times, maps, etc. One setback is the strict 2-hour parking lots. But that's a small price to pay for an awesome time. If you don't drive and would still love to go, the Camberwell train station is only a five minute walking distance away.

Stay tuned for more exciting posts!

We're super excited to get this up and going, so naturally our first post will be image-happy (:

We went for brunch with lovely fellow blogger Rachel at a nearby cafe on Whitehorse Road, called the Snow Pony. It's an adorable cafe that serves wicked poached eggs and lattes for very reasonable prices. The front portion of the cafe was filled by the time we got there, so we were ushered in to its back alley, which was ten times brighter (natural skylights!).

Rachel ordered the scrambled eggs with goat cheese on toast, See-Ann had the spinach and eggs with dukkah and capsicum. I had the avocado and spinach with poached eggs on toast. Their avocado spread was delish! We topped it off with coffees and a blood orange juice, and then went traipsing through a nearby park to burn off a few calories. For a Melburnian spring, the weather was fantastic! Brilliant sun rays and a cool breeze. The sunlight was coming in at a really strange angle though.

The lovely Rachel soaking up the sun! (:

So that's our first post! Keep checking for more updates...and more photos of food, promise!
